Members of the Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition are
organizations, not individuals. Organizations interested in
joining the Coalition must
- be national or international in scope
- have a demonstrated focus on urban forests
- be willing to sign a letter of commitment to the Coalition and its goals.
An organization is a member of the Coalition when the organization has been approved by the
Coalition Steering Committee (SC) and a signed letter of commitment from the organization has
been received. In their letter of commitment, an organization designates a Coalition representative;
the designee will be listed as the organizational contact in the Coalition directory, and will be
the person to whom Coalition correspondence is directed. A Coalition member can have multiple
organizational representatives involved in Coalition projects and committees, but each member
organization has only one vote.
Any Coalition member may propose a new national member or affiliate, and
organizations may also self-nominate. Nominated organizations will be invited
to complete an application form documenting their compliance with the criteria
and, for full members, their willingness to sign the Coalition letter of commitment.
Applications will be reviewed by the SC, which will decide whether to accept an
organization into the Coalition based on their compliance with membership criteria.
Please contact Jennifer Hinrichs, SUFC
convener, if you are interested in SUFC membership
“Ex officio” is Latin for "from the office," to describe someone who has a right because
of an office held. The Coalition may have ex officio members who provide input and ideas
and participate in the Coalition committees and activities because of their position or
employer, but who do not vote. A national organization that meets SUFC criteria may request
ex officio status if they perceive a potential conflict as a voting member or otherwise feel that it is inappropriate for them to be a full member of the Coalition.
Local, state, and regional organizations with a demonstrated focus on urban forests
can become SUFC Affiliates. Affiliates receive periodic communications from the Coalition,
provide input through conference calls and other venues, and participate in SUFC campaigns to advance urban forests. Affiliates are non-voting members.
